Travel and Lodging
Arriving by airNewcastle’s airport (NCL) is located about 7 miles (~25 minutes) from the City Centre, easily accessible by taxi, Uber, or Metro.
There are direct flights from several UK and European cities. It is also possible, and relatively easy, to fly into London or Edinburgh and travel to Newcastle via train. Transit from London airports will take about 4 hours (going via central London) and about 2 hours from Edinburgh International. For those of you coming from the U.S.: there are no direct transatlantic flights into NCL, so if you purchase a ticket to NCL you will likely connect via London (LHR), Paris (CDG), or Amsterdam (AMS). There are, however, many low-cost flights (e.g., EasyJet, Ryanair) in/out of Newcastle, so if you are looking to reduce costs, you might find it cheaper to book a direct flight from the U.S. to somewhere like Dublin, then purchase a low-cost ticket between Dublin and NCL. |
Arriving by railNewcastle Central Station is on the east coast main line and directly accessible from London King's Cross, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Newcastle can be reached as quickly as 2 hours and 35 minutes from London and 1 hour and 25 minutes from Edinburgh.
The University can easily be reached from Newcastle Central Station using the Metro. Haymarket Metro station is opposite the campus and only two stops from Central Station. The campus is approximately 18-minutes' walk from the train station. A taxi rank is also outside the station. Tickets can be purchased from https://www.thetrainline.com/. Tickets can also be purchased onsite in most train stations (via machine or, at major stations, via ticket agent); however, it is best to purchase your tickets in advance if possible. In general, tickets are less expensive the earlier you purchase them. |
Accommodations
There is no official conference hotel; however, Newcastle has a large number of hotels at a range of price levels. Hotels tend to be in one of 3 areas
(1) City Centre: The campus is located at one end of the City Centre, which is compact and easily walkable. There are a number of chain and boutique hotels scattered throughout the City Centre. Any hotel in this area should be within a 20-minute walk to the campus. The closest hotels in the City Centre are:
(2) Jesmond: Jesmond is the area located just on the other side of campus from the City Centre and is where many students and University staff live. It is walking distance from the campus and also has easy Metro access to the City Centre and Airport. It may be an option for those who want something less crowded than the City Centre. The closest hotels in Jesmond are:
(3) Quayside: The Quayside, along the riverfront, is a very nice and lively area. At the opposite end of the City Centre from the campus, it is a longer walk to campus (20-25 minutes, with a steep hill or medieval staircase leading up from the river) and does not have direct Metro access. There are a number of boutique and chain hotels along the Quayside. There are also hotels on the other side of the river (Gateshead), such as the Hilton (https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/nclhihi-hilton-newcastle-tyne-bridge). Gateshead has easy access to the City Centre and airport via Metro.
